Rei Kawakubo's Spring 1997 "Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body" collection — known as "Lumps & Bumps" — is considered the most radical fashion statement of the 20th century. The collection featured garments with built-in protrusions of padding that distorted the body underneath, challenging every assumption about what clothing should do to the human form. Critics were divided; the fashion world was changed permanently. Less than 100 pieces are believed to exist in private collections. Market value: $15,000–$40,000.
