Rei Kawakubo "Destroy" Collection Sweater AW1982

The AW1982 Comme des Garçons collection — known as the "Destroy" or "Hiroshima chic" collection — is the most important single collection in Japanese fashion history and one of the most significant in all of fashion. The intentionally distressed, torn, and asymmetrical garments were shown in Paris to an audience that had never seen anything like them. The lace and hole sweaters from this collection — appearing to be falling apart — were simultaneously beautiful and disturbing. Fewer than 30 examples are known to exist outside museum collections.
