Rei Kawakubo "Two Dimensions" Collection Jacket AW1997

Comme des Garçons' AW1997 "Two Dimensions" collection — also known as the "Dress Meets Body, Body Meets Dress" collection — was perhaps Kawakubo's most radical statement. Asymmetric padding under nylon shells created lumps, bumps, and distortions of the human silhouette that fashion critics called grotesque. Fashion history now recognizes it as the collection that permanently changed the definition of what clothing can be. Museum examples: $15,000–$50,000.
