Mazinger Z (1972) by Go Nagai was the first super robot anime and defined the mecha genre that would spawn Gundam, Evangelion, and decades of Japanese pop culture. Toei Animation-licensed merchandise from the original broadcast era (1972-1974) is extraordinarily rare. The bold, graphic treatment of Mazinger's face on these early tees reflects the DIY screen printing aesthetic of 1970s Japan. These pieces are collected by both anime historians and vintage fashion enthusiasts. Known examples have sold for ¥80,000–¥500,000.
