Asics's Gel-Lyte III (1990) introduced the split-tongue construction that eliminated lateral pressure and became one of the most technically innovative running shoes of the decade. Made in Japan examples from the early 1990s with the original Tiger logo (before the full transition to the Asics brand) are the most collectible. The Gel-Lyte III has been a cult favorite in Japan since its introduction, and its influence on contemporary trainer design — referenced by Salehe Bembury, Ronnie Fieg, and countless others — makes original examples significant.
