Yohji Yamamoto's debut Paris collections from 1981–1984 caused a revolution in Western fashion. His asymmetric, deconstructed, all-black aesthetic challenged everything the fashion establishment stood for. The AW1983 collection in particular — shown alongside Comme des Garçons at a moment critics called "the Japanese invasion" — featured oversized coats that redefined the male silhouette.
